The plug-and-play Razer Synapse installation then allows users to gain SYSTEM privileges on the Windows device lickety-split, since, as part of the setup routine, it opens an Explorer window that prompts the user to specify where the driver should be installed.

So here's a freebie /xDkl87RCmzĪs the researcher tells it and has BleepingComputer confirmed in its own tests, the problem is that when a user plugs in a Razer device (or dongle, if it’s a wireless peripheral), Windows automatically fetches an installer containing driver software and the Synapse utility. – Abuse elevated Explorer to open Powershell with Shift+Right click

– Windows Update will download and execute RazerInstaller as SYSTEM Need local admin and have physical access? It also awarded jonhat a bug bounty, in spite of the fact that the bug was disclosed. As of Sunday, the tweet had caught Razer’s attention, and the manufacturer told jonhat that its security team was working on getting out a fix ASAP. The bug was reported by security researcher jonhat ( who tweeted about it on Saturday after initially not hearing back from Razer. Its Razer Synapse software enables users to configure hardware devices, set up macros or map buttons. Razer manufactures popular, high-end hardware for gamers, including mouses, keyboards and gaming chairs. There’s apparently nothing keeping the vulnerability from allowing the same privilege escalation on Windows 11, although, if that operating system has in fact been tested, its vulnerability hasn’t yet been reported.

Thank you for you time.A zero-day bug in the device installer software for Razer peripherals – be they a Razer mouse, keyboard or any device that uses the Synapse utility – gives the plugger-inner full admin rights on Windows 10, just by inserting a compatible peripheral and downloading Synapse. If anyone finds a solution, I would be most grateful. Right now I'm thinking I should purchase a new computer, not Dell. Only to shotgun by reinstalling something. People see it when they are either surfing, using Microsoft Word, or listening to your favorite music. These machines are race horses and you don't see the problem when CPU usage is high e.g. The freeze happens when the CPU usage is fairly low. This could be a hardware problem dealing with a timing tolerance. I don't believe the problem has been identified fully but it seems to be a timing issue in either a chip set driver or the BIOS. The bottom line is there seems to be a problem with R7 and/or R8 machines randomly freezing up for about 1 to 5 seconds and then recovering. This machine was brand new and the call probably did not cost Jedi Josh anything. Jedi Josh was the most prolific writer and tried many complex solutions suggested by the community to fix the issue but without success. The 4th person (jedi josh) finally called Alienware Support who remotely accessed his/her amazing machine and did a whole bunch of things surrounding the BIOS and Intel chip set driver. The conclusion I got was 3 of the 4 are still living with it. I read thru the entire postings and it seems 4 folks have had the same problem as me back in October 2019. Thank you Pkshadow for pointing me to the Dell browser community page. I have checked Event Viewer to find any correlating log events and have not found any that happen at the same time.Įdited by rsc1, 15 February 2020 - 04:31 PM. I have reset Windows 10 and that did not solve the problem.

I have re-installed USB drivers and ran the trouble shooting application with no findings. I have changed USB ports and also tried a different USB mouse and another USB keyboard (with their own USB connection) and saw no changes in behavior. I currently have a Logitech keyboard and mouse connected to a single USB port. Frequency of occurrence runs about once every 2 hours. When it recovers, the last 2 or 3 characters typed (cached) will show up. My USB keyboard and/or mouse will stop working for a short while (1 to 5 seconds) and then recovers.
